Gritty drive nets Hancock another podium

Ollie Hancock claimed the fourth podium of his rookie BARC Formula Renault season at Thruxton on Sunday, with an aggressive drive that saw him climb from eighth to second on the first lap and eventually cross the line in third.

After qualifying a disappointing eighth on the grid, Hancock made up for it on the first lap of the race, passing several cars on the outside line of the first few corners before putting two wheels on the grass to snare second from David McDonald into the chicane.

Resisting pressure from McDonald with some heavy defending over the following five laps or so, Hancock eventually succumbed to the Eurotek driver who found a way past with a good slipstream.

With the rear tyres past their best, Hancock was unable to mount a fight-back and settled down to secure a third place finish.

Ollie Hancock: "I’ve been watching a lot of Thruxton races on TV, particularly Formula 3, to see what lines people take at the start and which work best. I stayed to the outside into turn one and, as everyone bunched on the inside line, I was able to just drive around them. Same thing at turns two and three. It just shows that if place your car carefully you can make big gains. The car was great in the race, better than in qualifying, so I’d like to thank my team for doing a great job on the set-up. Now I just hope we can carry this momentum in to the final round at Oulton and finish the year on a high.”

Ollie Hancock still lies third overall in the championship standings with the next and final race being held at OultonPark on 29 September.
